I spoke to Dr. Hurwitz after his talk at the IACFS. He had not found any symptom reduction from using epo 10,000 units once a week. I asked him if he had monitored C4a, as lowering C4a by epo was the thrust of two of my posters presented at that meeting. C4a must fall to see improvement. He had never heard of C4a. I asked him if he knew that the half life of epo (quite short) demands that injections be given no less often than every 4 days for correction of the many symptoms seen in chronic fatiguing illnesses. He was not aware of that fact either.
In my poster way back at the 2004 CFS meetings, there was preliminary data on epo and CFS. Dr. Klimas reviewed that poster and said that Dr. Hurwitz would be right over to talk to me, as their lab wasn't looking at VO2 max or any physiologic parameter to demonstrate improvement from epo. He never appeared and did not act on the business card she took with her. However, I do hope to see more collaboration in the future.
